Chicago/Dubuque Rail Expansion Project

Illinois Department of Transportation

Chicago/Dubuque Rail Expansion Project

Cost Estimate: $60 million

Track and signal improvements required for the implementation of 79 mph passenger rail service on the corridor from Chicago to Dubuque are being funded by IDOT. The corridor will be contained on Canadian National/Illinois Central trackage, with the exception of the usage of Amtrak’s corridor from Union Station to 21st Street in Chicago.

Canadian National began infrastructure modification analysis in January 2012, which should be completed in May 2012. IDOT anticipates work to begin in late 2012, with train operations starting in late 2014.

Major safety upgrades at 12 essential locations along the corridor are included in this project. Automatic flashing light signals and gates will be installed.
