Rail Car Procurement
Northeast Rail Corridor
"The acquisition of four new commuter rail cars will enable Delaware Transit Corporation to add new service on SEPTA’s Wilmington-Newark line to meet a growing demand. Fiscal Year 2011 ridership is averaging 10.6 percent higher than for the same period in FY2010." – Carolann Wicks, Secretary, Delaware Department of Transportation
Funding: $7.9 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
Delaware is purchasing four rail cars as part of a 120-car order by the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority. Delivery of the cars is expected by December 2011. The four electrical multiple unit cars are being constructed by United Transit Systems, a consortium of Hyundai-Rotem of South Korea. A total of 105 car shells are on site at the firm’s South Philadelphia plant. UTS began testing three cars in regular revenue service in October.
