Passenger Rail Projects
Englewood Flyover – CREATE Project
"The Englewood Flyover is a necessary project to improve current rail efficiency and to meet future demand for Metra, Amtrak, and freight service through the region. This will also help establish high speed rail between Chicago and Detroit." -- Illinois Transportation Gary Hannig
Funding: $133 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act; approximately $10 million in matching funds from the state
Preliminary design and planning work is underway for the construction of a "flyover" bridge at the 63rd Street Junction of Norfolk-Southern and the Metra Rock Island Tracks. These tracks are currently by Amtrak for all East Coast and Michigan service trains. Construction is expected to begin in late 2011 and will be completed in Fall 2014.
